In 1274 Brother Pietro retired to S. Bartolomeo in Legio with several brethren, and here he remained until 1276. This construction is extremely old and dates back to the first hermits on Maiella. It was restored in about 1250 and sheltered Pietro during the numerous fasts he undertook.
The building rises in an unusually arid scenario, beneath a rocky spur that covers it completely.
The refuge itself can be reached by the sacred staircase, usually done on one’s knees, passing thought the church whose only furnishings are the simple altar holding a wooden saint of the apostle saint, Bartolomeo.
On the left wall a niche offers a modest source of water that the faithful believe to be miraculous. A door to one side of the altar leads to the subsequent rooms.
