 Campli

In spite of its appearance of tranquil country town in Teramo’s area, Campli was hamlet with great traditions and it keeps splendid evidences of its glorious past. During the centuries of magnificence here master painters worked, as Giacomo da Campli, Cola d’Amatrice and Donato Teodoro.

S.Maria in Platea  was built in the 14th century over an older medieval church. The façade is by Giovanni Fontana da Penne (1793), the base of the bell tower is Romanesque, surmounted by an octagonal prism with majolica decorations by Antonio da Lodi (1474).

Near the church of S.Paolo there is the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs), dating back to 1772; it is an imitation of the Lateran staircase in Rome, granted by Clement XIV to the Stigmata of St Francis confraternity. Campli’s Scala Santa offers a plenary indulgence that covers the period from the third Sunday after Easter to Whit Monday.

At present Campovalano is just a little hamlet near Campli, but over two thousand years ago it was one of the most important cities of Piceni, italic people who used to live this valley before Romans’arrival. Some archaeologists discovered a huge necropolis where Piceni buried their deads. Near the necropolis there is the romanic church of San Pietro in Campovalano, an architectural and artistic masterpiece.
